Robert L. McClelland, a Lexington attorney with McClelland & Associates, PLLC,is recognized by his peers and clients alike for his experience as an Elder Law and Special Needs Planning attorney. He was the first elected Chair of the Kentucky Bar Association’s Elder Law Section.
Mr. McClelland is a 1972 graduate of the University of Charleston, a 1983 graduate of Salmon P. Chase College of Law and Northern Kentucky University and in 2013 was awarded a Master of Laws degree (LLM) in Elder Law from Stetson University College of Law in Gulfport, FL. Robert is a Certified Elder Law Attorney, being board certified in the practice of elder law by the National Elder Law Foundation, the only organization recognized by the American Bar Association to grant certification in elder law.
Robert has focused his practice to counsel families of aging clients and special needs families on legal issues affecting asset protection in long term care and public benefits, guardianship, financial exploitation and abuse. As President of the Kentucky Guardianship Association and a member of the National Guardianship Association, Robert is personally a court appointed guardian and "special needs” Trustee in multiple cases for aged or special needs clients.
Robert has been published repeatedly on issues familiar to attorneys with older clients. He speaks routinely about senior and special needs planning, including Medicaid planning, for the Kentucky Bar Association Annual Convention and regional Kentucky Law Update sessions. He is frequently called upon to give continuing legal education workshops on guardianship, Medicaid planning and special needs estate planning strategies to attorneys, social workers, nursing home and financial professionals.
In addition to his service for the Kentucky Guardianship Association, Mr. McClelland currently serves an appointment as a member of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government’s Commission on Senior Services. Among other associations, he is a member of the Elder Law Section of the Kentucky Bar Association, National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, Inc., the Special Needs Alliance, LLC, ElderCounsel, LLC, the Bluegrass Estate Planning Council and the Mid-South Estate Planning Forum.
Robert is married to Denise, also a Lexington attorney. They have two sons, Ethan and Luke.
